Dersim was under the rule of the Hurrians in 2200 BC, the Hittites in 1300 BC, the Urartians in 1200 BC, the Medes, Persians and Macedonians from 700 BC onwards, the Romans and for a short time the Parthians between 17 BC and 200 AD, the Cappadocians, Seleucids, the Eastern Roman Empire, the Byzantines and the Sassanids in 200-639, the Arabs in 639-972 and the Byzantines between 972-1071. After the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, when the Turkish rule rapidly spread in Anatolia, the region came under Turkish rule definitively in 1087. The region remained under the rule of the Seljuks, Mengüjeks and Akkoyunlus from 1087 onwards, and came under the rule of the Ottomans in 1473.

The region was established under Ottoman rule in 1847 under the name Dersim Livası, with Hozat as its center, and was connected to Erzurum. Dersim means ‘Silver Gate’ in Persian. The current Tunceli region, which was a separate province in 1879 under the name Dersim, was reduced to a governorship in 1886 and was connected to Elazığ province in 1892.

After the declaration of the Republic, on December 25, 1935, the Tunceli Province was established by connecting Erzincan’s Pulumur, Elazığ’s Nazımiye, Hozat, Mazgirt, Pertek, Ovacık and Çemişgezek districts, with Elazığ as its temporary center. On this date, the name of the region, which was previously Dersim, was changed to Tunceli. On December 30, 1946, the provincial center was transferred to the current location, formerly known as Kalan Town.

Dersim, located in the Upper Euphrates section of the Eastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye, is surrounded by the Munzur Mountains to the north and west, the Bingöl Mountains to the east, and the Keban Dam Lake to the south. The city, consisting of steep and narrow valleys in the lap of difficult-to-pass mountain ranges, is one of the most beautiful regions of Anatolia in terms of both its historical and natural beauties.

One of the natural beauties of Eastern Anatolia, Munzur Valley National Park, which became a national park in 1971, is quite rich in terms of stream resources, endemic plant species, animal species and vegetation, covering an area of 42 thousand hectares. The Munzur Mountains, rising up to 3300 m in the north, are divided by the Mecan and Munzur Suyu Valleys, and are a unique region with rich natural data, primarily stream resources and springs, endemic plant species and animal species specific to the region, and enriched vegetation and wild animal existence.
